Phella’s pool challenge from candied jamz. on Vimeo. I feel like Jay when he first heard “Ether” on Angie Martinez show. All I can say is “wow”. What was supposed to be a friendly pool challenge amongst two Firm members just got serious. Ya’ll aint heard the last. I’ll holla back.
I’m a firm believer in never letting anyone get the best of you. One group that always seems to get the best of me is At&t. Remember this from a few months back? They always hit me with these outrageous bills when I need my phone the most. I’m sick of it.
What would you do in my shoes? Keep paying because you need your phone for a living? Or risk losing business and don’t pay? But then if I don’t pay, what other options do I have?…they need to bring telegrams back.
I started yesterday like any other person would start off their first of the month. Rolled out of bed and put this song on repeat. (Bone Thugs N Harmony-1st Of The Month for those too lazy to click).
I felt great!!!! It was the 1st day of the last month, the release of Colin Munroe’s project, a new Clipse mixtape and most importantly another day above ground.
One bump in the road was the resignation of one of the strongest members our Famous Firm team had. He decided to go in another direction which is respected but it’s always unfortunate to see someone not finish something they helped build. On the other hand, I know that sometimes leaving can be the most liberating and empowering thing we can do. Everytime I’ve justifiably left something or someone (college, my moms house, girls, sugar, “friends” etc ), it’s usually difficult for a bit but the results have always been favorable in the end.
The good part about this business is you rarely have time to stop and think. The bad part is you rarely have time to stop and think. So as the saying goes, the show must go on. Colin Munroe’s mixtape was the next item on deck. It seems every blog picked it up and the feedback has been outstanding thus far. Shout out to Colin, his manager Andrew, and Sickamore for allowing me to brand the project.
After the dust settled from Colin’s stuff I hit the gym up and got a crazy workout in. This whole no sugar thing is working out better than I expected.
The next few hours were spent driving a rented Ford Explorer for reasons I don’t even think I can explain. Things just got crazy like they always do.
Then I went to every Staples and Office Depot looking for Glossy Paper so I can make a hard copy of the Colin mixtape for Pusha….let’s just say I’m not an arts and crafts major. I ran through about 10 sheets of glossy paper trying to cut it so it could fit inside a cd case. Then finally I gave up and just took the case and the cover separately.
Once that saga was over I reunited with my regular car and headed down to The Play Cloths Release party in DC. There’s a 70/30 chance that I’ll be doing some work with The Clipse plus I’m a fan so going to these events is nothing. This one had a lot of people in attendance. Knotts, The Neptunes, Wale, Tabi Bonney, Raheem Devaughn and my dude Jabari were all in the building.
*sidenote:There was this very beautiful young lady with dreads and a yellow shirt. I (possibly) saw her giving me the eye but I was working at the time. When I finally had time to go holla, she had dissapeared. If you’re reading this, hit me up. (Shouts to Capicu VA, he took a pic of her. Cue “What You Like” by Phella
I made my cameraman debut at the event. Some of you probably know Jabari for doing tons of interviews in the hip hop world. He didn’t have a camera with him, and I had mine in the car so we got some good footage for HipHopGame.
In the midst of this long confusing day, I missed plenty of calls, e-mails, and texts. So I dedicated 2am-4am to watching Fresh Prince and responding to everyone. Thanks for all the support of The Unsung Hero tape.
Actually it was all good 6 months ago. Just rummaging through some old youtubes and found this video from June. 95% of the people in the video don’t deal with one another for different reasons…smh. We could have had a dynasty.
Yep yep….old Phellito is taking another trip back up 95 N, Jersey Turnpike and Exit 13 (no LL Cool J). I’m sure some stories will develop out of the next 24 hours, it’s almost inevitable whenever I embark on one of these journeys.
I had an agenda/itinerary locked in until I got the following email from my first meeting:
“Hey Phella,
Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner. Unfortunately two of my colleagues were out sick today, Max and Sean. I stuck out the day even though I am sick as well. There’s a bug going around the office, and I’m not feeling great either.
I’m hoping we can re schedule for another time real soon? I was really looking forward to both meeting you and seeing the show tomorrow night. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and I am looking forward to meeting up with you soon!
Best,
(I’ll leave her identity private)”
No problem at all, this equals more free time on my hands to get into mischief.
Last year I saw this Usher special where he brought Beyonce out and basically had a rendezvous on stage with her. I thought to myself, “damn Hov needs to control his chick man, this is no good”.
Then today a friend of mine was telling me about an episode of Christina’s Court she watched earlier. The case was pretty much about a man who married a centerfold and then grew to dislike and dissaprove of her profession. When he saw the poses she was doing and the outfits she wore, he would become furious and big fights would ensue.
The question my friend posed to me is simple: Can a guy realistically be with a woman who has a career that involves her revealing herself whether partially or fully? Can it workout long term or will he eventually grow tired like the guy from Christina’s Court?
Now everyone who knows me knows I have a slight obsession for Bria Myles. If I marry her, would I be comfortable with the kind of magazines she does? the answer is nope!!!!!! Hell nah I won’t. This aint Pretty Woman. I might catch some heat for this and be called a hypocrite but I happen to be a man with pride. I’ve seen to many dudes lose going this route. Can’t have dudes singing “I Love Your Girl” wherever we go.
The big excuse is usually that “you knew what I did when you met me”. My answer is simply “I didn’t know we would get married when I met you. Now please change your ways. Thanks”
Myself, Articulate and Sakwe of The Famous Firm got up at the Subway on Howard University Campus to discuss business earlier on this evening (tuesday). We talked about everything from road trips, to promotion, to the progression of recorded music, the industry and blah blah. Good meeting until we saw a bunch of college types heading to what seemed to be a party.
We decide to investigate further….A 5 mile walk, an ID swap, and a few dollars later we were walking UNSEARCHED into a club with about an 11/1 girl to guy ratio. Needless to say it was POPPPPPIIIINN!!!!
I swear on everything I’m not a party animal. Im actually the opposite, but recently I’ve been on a tear. And a bash on a Tuesday night was really the icing on the “Phella has lost his mind cake”. Maybe I’m rebelling…any thoughts?
Salute to everyone who made this a special 21st bday weekend for me. The festivities at Love Nightclub far exceeded my expectations. Saw some old faces like Free (Former 106 & Park Host). Michael Beasley and Kevind Durant were in the building as well. But most importantly my people were there. The Famous Firm as well as my closest friends sans a few that couldn’t make it (thanks for at least trying). I want to go on a big rant about how seeing 21 is an accomplishment where I’m from and how there were times I wasn’t sure I would but I’ll spare you. I just Thank God and I’m very Greatful.
Highlights of the weekend: Everyone trying to convince me to drink and me lying and saying I drank when clearly all I had was water.
Being front row to watch the last 2 number 2 NBA draft picks (Michael Beasley and Kevin Durant) going for 40 against each other (at The Goodman League) on Friday and then sharing the VIP section next to them on Saturday.
Someone who shall remain nameless ordering a milk at IHOP.
The party itself. Especially when “Put On” came on.
First of all gotta have my music so I’ll be copping this within the next few hours. These four have yet to fail me. Only thing is their music might land me in jail one day.
“Cry now motherf&*&rs, the four of us, counting money on the camera like the Chambers brothers”
Next up on the agenda is Pineapple Express. Altough I’ve never smoked before, weed movies and songs always seem to entertain me more than anything else. I blame Bone Thugs N Harmony. The movie also stars my dearest “Miss Rosie Perez”…gotta love the D’s.
And now I gotta get my sports. Whats life without sports? 8/8/08. If you add those up you get 24 aka Kobe Bryant. Tomorrow MVP and the rest of his USA buddies start their quest for Olympic Gold. Believe I’ll be watching.
I’m also going to be courtside in Southeast DC tomorrow night to watch OJ Mayo and Michael “The Pride of DC” Beasley battle it out at The Goodman League. Should be one for the ages. Get there early like Miles would say.
And just when you thought it was all over…THE BIG 21. Yep, you’re boy is of age (whatever that means).
Gilbert Arenas if you’re reading this (which I know you are), eat you’re heart out. I’m going to put that measley $1.5 million bash you threw at Love to shame. He had Diddy, The Clipse, Lil Wayne, and some aight models. I got Sickamore, The Famous Firm, Young Swagger and some TOP MODELS (like literally TOP MODELS) coming thru.
"Soon silence will have passed into legend. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation... tooting, howling, screeching, booming, crashing, whistling, grinding, and trilling bolster his ego. His anxiety subsides. His inhuman void spreads monstrously like a gray vegetation."
