Kind of hungry but I'm back on my lunatic healthy eating habits so I can't even slide down to Bagel Bros the way I would if this was 2 weeks ago.
Last night I watched Lebron prove why Kobe is the best player in the league. As a person, I love Lebron, I think personality wise he's way easier to get along with than Kobe. Unfortunately personality never won any games. Kobe's an assassin. He doesn't let up till his opponents are completely disheartened and realize they have no shot. In the event he takes a loss, he still makes you work to earn that victory and makes a statement to let you know he'll be back.
I said all that because the entire Famous Firm tried to crucify me the other day when I said Dwayne Wade wasn't a true winner. People threw verbal tomatoes at me and proclaimed that I knew nothing.
Ummmmm what else is going on? Oh I finally cut my hair yesterday after 3 months. I wasn't growing it for any particular reason other than that's what I do every Winter. The picture above is misleading because it was combed out so you can't tell really how high and out of control it had gotten.
Speaking of pictures, tomorrow's the 1st of the month. That means time for new profile pics on all gazillion sites that I'm registered to. Also time for a new nickname. I'm running with Phrankie Lyman. If you haven't seen "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" you should check it out, Frankie was the man. Hopefully, Phrankie will do him justice.
I've never been jealous of anyones girlfriends or anyones cars. What I am guilty of being jealous of is seeing creative people create together. I envy that and long for it. That's the whole purpose of starting Da Fam back up; like a free-zone of sorts for creative people where they won't have to worry about being judged or categorized. I envy these guys who just sleep in the studio all day and make music. Wish I could do it too but that starving artist routine gets old real quick and it's hard to justify. I miss when I was younger and I thought being a rapper was a good career. My naivete allowed me to just rhyme rhyme rhyme all day long. Now that I've discovered that rappers get no respect in the world, I'd be a fool to invest ALL my time into it. I'll find time eventually though. And if I don't, I'll definitely give shine to those that do.
"Forget this rap sh*t, I need a new hustle/a little bit of everything, the new improved Russell/I say that reluctantly cause I do struggle/As you see I can't leave so I do love you"-Jay-Z
Did it just take me an hour to write this? It's 7AM now. Time flies when you're having fun I guess.
Today is a big day for me personally. It marks exactly one year since my meeting with Sickamore in NYC and subsequent joining of The Famous Firm (The only reason I even remember the date is because of the above picture I took on the Blackberry while I was up there). If you’ve read the blog from day one then you know the story, if not then here’s the brief version:
2006 left school after 3 frustrating semesters. 2007 making music and trying to blow up. Things going okay but not great. Wasting money like every other aspiring artist. Very little business sense. Very naive. Money starts to run very low and I’m contemplating quitting music. Around December slip into depression. Around January 2008 start getting pressured to go back to school. February 15th wait in line for hours in the icy cold to hear Barack speak. Obama speech motivated me so much that there was no way I could quit on my dreams. Stumbled on to Sickamore resignation letter from Atlantic and heard about Famous Firm starting up. Seemed like a perfect fit. Wanted to see if he could assist in anyway with my music. Took last bit of money and didn’t tell anyone but moms;drove to NYC. Meeting almost didn’t happen but it did. Went very well and resulted in me being asked to handle The Firm in the DMV area.
That’s the long and short of how we got to this point. Hope it inspires someone out there. In the last one year, The Firm has served as sort of my second college. I’ve had a chance to learn things I was completely clueless about prior. Things like invoices, accounting, scheduling, marketing plans etc. Things that I would probably have never ever learned. Where I’m from people don’t really teach you stuff or instill knowledge in you. You either learn it on your own or you don’t learn it all. Sometimes I shake my head when I see some of the mistakes people make due to a lack of knowledge (it’s why I ramble so much on here in hopes that it will help somebody somewhere). Having the opportunity to interact with legitimate business people and moguls and world class talent has been a priceless experience for me. Thanks to the entire FF team, those that are still on board and those that have moved on to other things. Also on that February 25th of last year, it was decided to put Da Fam Music on hold. Da Fam Music is the umbrella me and my partner were doing music under. No paperwork, no receipts, just a name and a dream. I’ve decided to re-launch Da Fam Music but this time everything is legit and with a new cast of characters. It’s called Da Fam Music but it’s more than just a music group. It’s more so a team of artsy people that are committed to providing the world with high quality entertainment. This is something I’m extremely passionate about and might be going into more detail about. I say might because with this, we’re not going to post a million bulletins or flood peoples inbox. We’re going to go back to the old days of word of mouth. “The original goal when this started was to entertain people with our art and make lots of money doing it; However, I believe the purest form of entertainment is achieved when an artist feels no pressure to compromise his or her work for the sake of profit. Ideally Da Fam will be comprised of individuals who believe so much in the power of art that mainstream success and financial gain will be secondary. The goal isn’t to be anti-money or anti-mainstream, we love that stuff, just not enough to compromise who we truly are”.
The best rapper alive in my opinion drops his second full studio album tomorrow. That’s a very misleading statement though, because he’s easily recorded over 300+ songs in the time span between his debut in 2003 and this one, most of which were classic. If you’re not up on Joe Budden by now, please do yourself the favor.
Lots of people seem to not like this woman. Everyones entitled to their opinion. Me personally, I think she’s great and this another example of why. They did a little from Hairspray and a litte from Sound Of Music.
“For what it’s worth, it’s never too late……to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit… start whenever you want… you can change or stay the same. There are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. I hope you see things that stop you. I hope you feel things that you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life that you’re proud of and if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.”-Benjamin Button
I’m still at war with this blog for desserting me in my time of need. Putting my focus into www.thefamousfirm.com and www.famousfirmnews.com from here on out. Might be back, might not be.
Sidebar:I’m just joking, kinda. I appreciate all the I Am Phella supporters since day one. Feel free to hit me on the email about anything. phellamusic@gmail.com
Colin and Young Buck are sharing the front page of imeem this morning. It’s for the song “I’m Fine” produced by Beatnick & K-Salaam. The song is ridiculous and assuming your volume is up right now, it’s probably playing on the playlist to your left as you read this.
And just when you thought it was over, Colin and 88-Keys on the remix for “Last Cause”. This is a Myspace exclusive that you can stream at Myspace.com/colinmunroe
